Coin roll (CR) wafers are packaged similarly to pennies in a 50 penny roll. They are stacked next to each other in rolls of typically 50 to several hundred wafers in order to conserve shipping cost.
Polished coin roll wafers (PCR) will generally have light scratches. Unpolished coin roll (UCR) wafers are typically lapped and/or etched but not mirror polished.
Coin roll wafers with films (CRF) are usually polished coin roll wafers that have films on the front, back or both surfaces. The films can be a variety including metals, oxides, nitrides, polysilicon or others.
CR wafers may need to be cleaned at the customer site for some applications as this packaging method does not lend itself to the same level of cleanliness as sealed cassetted wafers.
Typical applications for CR wafers include: machine cycle testing; utilization as substrate carriers for other devices bonded to the CR wafer (ie other chips or other wafers bonded to the CR wafers); and as starting material to be polished for higher end applications (ie reclaim substrates).
CR wafers including PCR, UCR, and CFR are clearly defined as such when you go to buy the wafers on the website, so that you know exactly what you are purchasing.
